My First Vegan Drinks

Who: VN staff and SF vegans
What: Vegan Drinks!
Where: Martuni's, San Francisco, Calif.
When: July 29, 2010
Why: After-work drinks with the VN staff and awesome SF vegans? Why not!

The Scoop: We're approaching my one-month anniversary as editorial assistant here at VegNews, and so in my honor, we decided to have a party. That's a slight exaggeration, but the VN staff did hit the town last night for Vegan Drinks, our monthly gathering at the charming Martuni's piano bar.

Martuni's had a seasonal special, last night was orange Creamsicle martinis—just like the ones Mom used to hand out on hot July days, minus the sticky fingers, plus the alcohol. To add to the summer flair, Martuni's has also begun supplying us with vegan hot dogs for less than a buck. And the all-you-can-eat vegan popcorn is nothing short of addicting.

Our very own vegan hot dog cart

We were super excited to have vegans from across the Bay Area to break hot dog bread with. There was a great turn-out of all ages last night—which reinforced the beauty of Vegan Drinks: building community. Being new to West Coast (I've barely left the Midwest in my entire life), I'm so grateful for opportunities like last night to get out and socialize with wonderful, like-minded people.

One month in, I'm loving VegNews and finally beginning to feel like this foggy city is my home. And I'm looking forward to more Vegan Drinks, and other great vegan events in the not-so-distant future!

Vegan Drinks: Hello, 2010!

Who: VN Editorial Assistant Liz Miller and the VN crew!
Where: Martuni's, San Francisco, Calif.
When: Thursday, January 28, 2010
Why: Cocktail time is always more fun with like-minded people!

The Scoop: When happy hour rolls around, hardworking vegans are just like everybody else—we too enjoy indulging in afterwork libations. Thankfully for thirsty Bay Area vegans, VegNews and Vegansaurus host SF Vegan Drinks once every month at Martuni's. While the drink specials are great—no, seriously, we have our own monthly special—the company is certainly why we love and greatly anticipate the event. The best part of the night was definitely seeing the room slowly grow from a handful of people to an overwhelming, tightly packed crowd of the finest vegans in SF. Familiar faces included vegan bodybuilder and former VN cover model Kenneth Williams, VN contributor Mat Thomas, VegWebmistress and Vegansaurus founder Laura Beck, vegetarian chef Philip Gelb, Brian Grupe of Vegan Outreach, Dr. Mark Berman, Suicide Girls co-founder and Vegansaurus contributor Steve Simitzis, and many more! Yep, we vegans are a pretty awesome crowd—and very looking good, of course.

Elizabeth and Abby show off how "cute" is done.

It wasn't all just fun though—there were also games. While sipping on cocktails, guests had the opportunity to enter VN's raffle for a chance to win a dozen cinnamon rolls from Cinnaholic! As if that alone wasn't a good enough reason to sign-up, all proceeds from the raffle benefited LBGT Compassion. Florian and Shannon Michelle Radke of Cinnaholic were even on-hand to see who the lucky winner would be. After much anticipation, officer manager Lyndsay Orwig drew the winning raffle ticket: VN columnist and vegan chef extraordinaire Jesse Miner! In total, the raffle raised more than $60 for LBGT Compassion.

If you haven't tried Cinnaholic's crazy delicious cinnamon roll creations, we can't emphasize enough how, well, crazy fantastic they are. Between delicious drinks we chatted with old friends, mingled with new ones, and photographed everything in between. We were thrilled with the teeming turn out, and can't wait for next month's celebration—hope to see you there! Cheers!

Bottoms Up!

Who: The whole VN staff!
What
: SF Vegan Drinks
When: Thursday, February 26, 2009
Where: Martuni's, San Francisco, Calif.
Why: To mobilize the vegan movement—and drink!

The Scoop: So, maybe you've heard a little something about this whole Vegan Drinks thing. When we first read about New York's inaugural version, our initial collective response was, "Why don't we have one of those?" So, after a bit of diligent bar-sleuthing—research, you know—we were thrilled to launch SF Vegan Drinks. Could we have been happier with how the evening turned out? No.

First of all, Skip, the owner of Martuni's, and Brett, our extra-awesome bartender, took maybe the best care of us that any group has ever received. Even the popcorn from their recently purchased popcorn machine was vegan! Even though the crowd got pretty massive, they were right on top of getting everyone their drinks super quickly, which certainly helped the evening go smoothly. Settled in the cozy, semi-private backroom, we conducted a vegan-cheese taste test on the bar's grand piano. Yes, it was a classy evening, thank you very much.

Of course, the best part of the night was everyone who came! We had the pleasure of seeing some familiar faces and lots of new ones, which is exactly what we'd been hoping for while planning the night. The winner for longest-distance-traveled was definitely Erica Meier of Washington, DC-based Compassion Over Killing. Well, OK, maybe she technically was already in the area for work and happened to come by, but we're content to lie to ourselves and think that she flew out just for us. Here she is with Elizabeth:

Also in attendance were Erik Marcus of Vegan.com, vegan bodybuilder and former VN cover model Kenneth Williams, illustrator extraordinaire Mark Middleton and his collaborator for The Road to Vegetopia feature story, Mat Thomas, chef/VN columnist Jesse Miner
(pictured below with his lovely wife Erin), and Thomas Stephen Bates of the very exciting Gray Area Foundation for the Arts, just to name a few.

No alcohol needed: Jesse and Erin enjoy booze-free beverages

A room full of happy vegans is definitely what we'd call a successful first event, and we can't wait for this month's—which will take place on the 26th, for those of you eager to mark your calendars. See you there!
